Fighting for Fair Pay for Pilbara Workers

June 26, 2024 1:18 pm

The WMWA is a partnership of Australia’s two biggest mining unions – the Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) and the Mining and Energy Union (MEU). For over a decade, WMWA has organised thousands of mine workers across the Pilbara and supported members through underpayments, disciplinary issues, WHS concerns and camp standards.

But in 2024, we’re changing gears and kicking off bargaining for Collective Agreements!

Why do union members earn 26% more than non-union workers? Because they have strong Collective Agreements!

A Collective Agreement is when workers band together to negotiate things to create their enterprise agreement, including:

  • workplace conditions
  • transparent wage structures and regular wage increases
  • better hours of work
  • improved rosters
  • guaranteed leave provisions
  • relevant, appropriate allowances
  • strong consultation and dispute resolution
  • Work health and safety

This means when workers get together and stand together, they always get a better deal.

Union collective agreements will normally see workers better off then on their individual contracts. If your individual contract does have better terms and conditions, these will continue to apply under any Union agreement.

WMWA will keep members updated as we begin the bargaining process in mid-2024, so look for us in your inbox! If you’re not already a member of your union, join today and join the fight for a better deal in the Pilbara!
